Stop #

Sheena McCorquodale

5320 Island Hwy W.,
Qualicum Beach, BC V9K 1Z2

I worked as a graphic designer all my adult life in sign design, computer graphics, hand-painted designs, tv set graphics, theatre set & prop design, and typography. I always explored my own creativity away from the commercial work environment with drawing, painting, and sculpture and since 2015 I have been developing my own interests at my Cathouse Gallery in Qualicum Bay. I am a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and currently hold my AFCA. I am also an elected member of the Society of Canadian Artitists. I enjoy conte drawing from life and acrylic painting, but my favourite medium is sculpting with chicken wire. A surprisingly forgiving medium that provides me with endless opportunities to create. I love having the ability to breathe life into this relatively industrial, unlikely material.

6

Stop #

Debé VanderHeide

5320 Island Hwy W.,
Qualicum Beach, BC V9K 1Z2

Deb VanderHeide is a Canadian jewelry artist working from her home-based studio in Qualicum Beach, BC. Her enameling techniques include torch firing, kiln firing, sgraffito, layering, liquid enamel, and other surface treatments that bring depth and color to her work. Rooted in a love of process and materials, Deb’s work is inspired by natural textures, metal’s inherent beauty, and the handmade journey.

7

Stop #

Kent Leontowich

3055 Raymur Place,
Qualicum Beach, BC V9K 2N9

If you align with a philosophy of sustainability, recycle-reuse-reclaim, then you are going to fall in love with Kent Leontowich from Westcoastkitsch. All of our products are made from our home-based studio in North Qualicum Beach located on beautiful Vancouver Island. His work combines reclaimed wood with painted scenes from Vancouver Island and British Columbia. Materials are of central importance to his work, and are chosen for both their associative meanings and their aesthetic appeal. This approach has to do with a strong environmental ethic as well as the idea of rescuing orphaned items both natural and manmade. His art pieces show a connection to our natural coastal surroundings.

Stop #

Amy Baxter

109 Noonday Road,
Bowser, BC V0R 1G0

I do a painterly style of digital photography layering images with a textural element with the main subject of the piece. No filters are used, just multiple layers. I also paint in acrylic and oils. Mostly west coast themed semi-impressionistic style. I am mostly known for my photography.

Stop #

Susy-j Johnsen

59 Bowser Road,
Bowser, BC V0R 1G0

Although born in Denmark Susy is an island gal. At the ripe age of 3 months she convinced her parents to emigrate directly to Campbell River, BC, Canada. Teachers recognized as early as primary school that she could sustain intense focus while doing art. Although assignments were not always well-writen they were well-illustrated. Her art education began at CARIHI and was influenced especially by two teachers -- Ms Simpson (gr8) and Ms Hilsden (gr11). Upon graduation she won a bursary from the Campbell River Arts Council. With that incentive she went to art college. A college portfolio led her to graphic design which segued into a career in advertising. Intense years of deadline-driven agency work led her to rethink her art. The irony was that now she was spending all her time doing everything but art. Quitting the city led her back to the island and a place to explore watercolours. Why she chose watercolours was simply because she didn't want to stain her car seats with acrylics or oils during a time when she was homeless living in her car. Without a studio she began painting outside and without a place to display her art she started a blog. She posts a new painting every month often twice-monthly. Follow her passion, see her hone her skills, at https://susy-j.ca/newpaintings

14

Stop #

Wanitta Ranson

5040 Longview Drive,
Deep Bay, BC V0R 1G0

I’m an Island girl! I moved to the Lighthouse area in 2014 and quickly established myself as a volunteer in the community, first with Bowser Seniors Housing Society, and then in 2015 became a volunteer with Oceanside Emergency Support Services. I’ve been creative since I was a kid but really learned an appreciation of arts and crafts when I was ten when our family moved to Fort Rupert. There I became friends with a couple of girls from the Kwakiutl First Nation community. I was thrilled to learn beading, bead embroidery, weaving, etc., from the kind and patient grandmothers and aunties. My learning continued throughout my life, including at a college level where most of my courses were in Indigenous studies of history and cultures of First Peoples of the Americas. I also took first year law courses in First Nation Administration that included the study of the Indian Act. When our kids were young I was pretty busy as a stay at home mom but I took up cross stitch and by the time they both graduated I had designed 37 patterns, some of which I sold online. In 2004 I picked up my crochet hooks again, and then in 2006 began dabbling in jewellery making. Always evolving my crafts, a few years ago I began painting jewellery with enamels and gel paints, and experimenting with various techniques, as well as incorporating new and vintage components into my designs. I also upped my crochet game and have now created a line of completely designed-by-me goods for home and body. I don’t limit my creativity to just jewellery or crochet. I love to upcycle items to make fun home decor items. Designing and creating is my thing and I love it!

15

Stop #

Peggy logan

5224 Gainsberg Road,
Bowser, BC V0R 1G0

The arts of enamelling and jewellery making have engaged Peggy for over thirty years. She has explored many themes, processes, and materials that have allowed her imagination to grow. An example of this is in her fascination for seeds where she casts seed forms in silver, then incorporating these forms with precious pearls or semi precious stones to create original pieces of jewellery. Enamelling glass to metal is much like painting in the choices of color and the layering process through multiple kiln firings to create a piece of art. Cloisonne and Champleve are the forms of enameling that are her specialty. She finds joy in the process to see an idea come to completion opening the door to another idea.

16

Stop #

Claire Olivier

5224 Gainsberg Road,
Bowser, BC V0R 1G0

Claire has been practicing ceramic arts for over 30 years. She has exhibited and collaborated with many BC ceramic and mixed media artisans. Claire moved to Qualicum Beach from Salt Spring Island where she was an active member of their guild for several years. Living close to the Salish Sea and Douglas Fir forest nurtures and influences her work. She strives to embrace that deep ancestral reaction to art made with fire, with the beauty of the cosmos, organic colour, curling smoke and scorching shadows. Forms are hand built using coils or slabs of clay and undertake an initial firing in an electric kiln. Her earth fired work receives a second firing in another kiln or pit layered with seaweed, coffee grounds, salt, grasses, driftwood, kindling and the like. This organic mixture is left to burn for several hours. Once complete, the pieces are finished with either beeswax or a protective sealant. The result is a unique marriage of her creations and fire, weather, and material mix. The outcome is never totally predictable. This is what makes the work so exciting. She is always heartened when it elicits a reaction and begs to be touched. Claire also creates unique translucent, water tight, porcelain vases and colourful tableware.

Gwendolyn Monnet

Fanny Bay, BC V0R 1W0

I was born in BC, Canada to a large family of Métis heritage. I have managed to live my life doing what I love the most; most of the time. This usually involves a happy mix of art, community and beaches. Art has always been an integral part of my life. Historically, the women in my family were known for their beautiful beading and sewing skills which became part of my identity early on. I love simple lines and bold colors, most of my past works include playful cartoon animals. I have also collaborated with students to create large works in a few of our local schools. You can find my prints and cards in several shops and galleries on Vancouver Island. More recently, I have been using and building on the floral designs of my grandmother and have been exploring different mediums such as beadwork, soap stone carving and painting on drums. I have also created larger sculptural pieces to honor MMIWG+ which have been featured at the CVAG.

Teresa Knight

Ive lived on Vancouver Island for 20 years and I love painting my vision of the best of life here! This includes all the things i think and see while walking my dog, so there are many peaceful night scenes as well as ocean views. and forest walks... My thoughts and feelings get painted too, and I feel very sorry for many animals who suffer at our hands so some paintings share this empathy for them. As I've been painting for so many years, my works are in collections around the globe and have been in many exhibitions and show. I continue to paint and to teach painting which is simply - fun!
